Cancer hospital to open this June

February 25, 2020

The new Clatterbridge Cancer Centre is scheduled to open in Liverpool on West Derby Street at the end of June 2020.

The 11-storey, state-of-the-art cancer hospital will be co-located alongside Liverpool University Hospital Foundation Trust (LUHFT) and the University of Liverpool, enhancing care for the most seriously unwell cancer patients and facilitating growth in translational and clinical research that will benefit people across the region.

It was expected the hospital would open its doors in May but the recent storms and last-minute issues have put that back a month.

Dr Liz Bishop, Chief Executive of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust, explained: “The first stage of an exciting redevelopment of our current Wirral site has already begun with Maggie’s Merseyside starting work on their new permanent site in the grounds. The next phase of development will begin after the new Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool has opened.

“The move date for haemato-oncology in-patients to our new hospital from our current clinic in The Royal Liverpool University Hospital has also now been confirmed as September 2020.

“We are tremendously excited about the new hospital which will transform cancer care for people across Merseyside and Cheshire.”
