Covid-19 dementia social care study

April 21, 2020

Sefton Older Persons Forums is supporting a new qualitative study looking at how COVID-19 has affected the lives of people living with dementia and their carers.

Justine Shenton, co-ordinator of the forums, said that together with researchers at the University of Liverpool, and many other social care and social support organisations, they are looking at how the lives of people with dementia and family carers are affected by the closure of social support services due to Corona virus.  These might include social clubs you usually attend, groups, peer support events and meetings as well as social care services such as day care, respite or home care.

Because of the coronavirus situation, the government has imposed severe restrictions on everyday living, particularly for vulnerable population groups. As a result, people with dementia and family carers are likely to struggle getting the social support they need.

This study, which is being led by Clarissa Geibel, is running until the end of May.

If you are caring for a loved one with dementia (who either lives at home or in a care home), OR if you live with dementia by yourself without a family member, then the study would like to hear from you.
