Invitation to join consultation: Royal Liverpool University Hospital has been chosen as a pilot site for the Martha’s Rule implementation

May 9, 2024

Royal Liverpool University Hospital are delighted to share the news that it has been chosen as a pilot site for the Martha’s Rule implementation.

The hospital is really keen to consult with you and obtain your thoughts and feedback on this process to ensure that we are getting as much as possible right the first time.

You may have heard or read about Martha’s story in the media:

Martha was a young lady who died in 2021 from sepsis, and when the coroner looked into her case, it was noted that her parents attempted on more than one occasion to advocate for her escalation in care and an expert second opinion. Unfortunately, and very sadly, Martha deteriorated and was admitted too late to critical care for her life to be saved, but she leaves a lasting legacy in the national roll out of Martha’s Rule.

This is the ability for not just medical staff, but patients, families, advocates and all members of the MDT to raise a concern about a patient’s deterioration and call a dedicated phone number 24/7 to ask for a review from the critical care team about the patient’s care. There is some national guidance of how this is to be rolled out, but to make this a success in Liverpool we would like to invite you to share your opinions as to how this service would look to you.
