Lifeline as The Life Rooms goes online

A virtual version of The Life Rooms aims to help frontline workers on International Nurses’ Day today.
Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust, one of the leading mental and community health trusts in the country, is marking International Nurses Day 2020 (12 May) by creating a virtual version of its Life Rooms wellbeing centres in record time, to help nurses and other staff stay safe.

Following the closure of their five Life Rooms centres for the Covid-19 pandemic last month, staff were forced to consider how their nationally acclaimed social prescribing model of improving health could continue – and, in particular, benefit nurses and other frontline workers battling to save lives.

In just two weeks, the Life Rooms courses and other content from its website were transformed into online courses, while classrooms were converted into call centres to ensure its 5,000 service users and frontline staff had access to information on healthy cooking, wellbeing and exercise.

The Life Rooms Service Lead Gary Thorpe said: “What makes The Life Rooms so successful is the strength of its community. We knew as we closed our doors we had to find a safe way of keeping that community together, to support our staff and to prevent the most vulnerable among us descending into mental crisis.

“We feel privileged to be able to support nurses and other frontline workers who have been working under intense pressure over the last few months so we’re delighted if any of our content or courses help them in that and maintain their healthy wellbeing.”
