Liverpool University Hospitals improving accessibility for visually impaired patients and visitors

October 30, 2024

Liverpool University Hospital Foundation Trust (LUHFT) Patient Experience Team recently invited engagement partners and representatives from local sight loss charities to attend a tour of St Paul’s Eye Unit at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

All participants had lived experience of sight loss and provided their feedback on the accessibility of the department. This included any environmental issues or wayfinding challenges that might impact the experience of patients who are blind or have a visual impairment and are attending an appointment at the unit. Feedback from the sessions will be used to identify where improvements can be made and forms part of a broader wayfinding project at the Royal, led by Director of Nursing, Lindsey Vlasman.

Last month, Merseyside Sight Loss Councils also delivered a Vision Awareness session at Aintree University Hospital to show LUHFT colleagues and volunteers how to support partially sighted or blind patients navigating around our hospitals to help reduce any challenges they might experience.
