NHS 70 – Celebrating progress and innovation in mental health across the North

May 10, 2018

As part of activities to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the NHS, NHS England is focusing on mental health services during May.  Across the North, it wants to mark progress and innovation in mental health over the last 70 years.

A spokesperson from NHS England explains: “During the past 70 years, mental health has seen massive strides in funding, diagnosis, treatments and reducing the stigma that used to surround mental illness. No longer do we have asylums where the mentally ill are locked away from society; mental health is seen as just as important as physical health and care in the home and in the community is now the norm.

“We have seen investment in brand new state of the art facilities.  More and more psychological therapy is now accessible either through a GP or online, via the telephone, or through self-referral, meaning people get better access to services.  The advent of social media groups and apps like Headspace mean access to immediate help and support from people with the same or similar condition through mobile devices.”

The focus is a celebration of progress in mental health in the North and people are encouraged to share their stories on Twitter using
