Sefton champions local carers for national celebration

Sefton Council is joining organisations across the UK to celebrate the amazing contribution of carers to their families and communities.

Carers Week 2o18 takes place 11-17 June, raising awareness of the roles of unpaid carers, the difference they make and the challenges they face.

A carer is someone who provides unpaid support to a partner, child, relative or friend who would not manage their daily lives or would see a decline in their health without them. A carer can be almost any age, with children and young people also taking up caring roles.

People often do not identify themselves as being carers, just seeing their actions as something they expect to do for their loved ones.

As part of Carers Week, Sefton Carers Centre is hosting Get Connected, an event to highlight the free support and services available to carers in the borough and beyond. At the event carers will receive specialist guidance from the centre’s Welfare Benefits Advisors and Parent Carers Team.

Sefton Young Carers Service will be available to meet families of children with caring roles, as well as helping professionals such as teachers and social workers to identify young carers. ‘Get Connected’ takes place June 13, 10am-2pm at Sefton Carers Centre, South Road, Waterloo, L22 5PE.

Cllr Paul Cummins, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care at Sefton Council said: “While Carers Week is an opportunity to shine a light on our selfless carers, it is also important that we reach people who may not yet realise that they are carers themselves.

“Having seen first hand the vital support offered by Sefton Carers Centre, I advise any carer in Sefton to drop in to Get Connected, or make contact with the centre to see how they can help.”
