New sexual health clinic open for quick access to PrEP

A new sexual health clinic has been launched at Axess Sexual Health’s Liverpool City Centre location. The PrEP Express allows patients already on PrEP to access their medication faster than they usually would.

PrEP is a pill you can take to protect yourself from HIV. When taken correctly, PrEP is extremely effective at stopping HIV transmission.

PrEP is available to anyone who may be exposed to HIV. This includes men who have sex with men (MSM), commercial sex workers, trans people, and those who are in a relationship with someone who is HIV positive.

The PrEP Express clinic means that patients already on PrEP have faster access to their medication. Previously, PrEP appointments would be placed in a general clinic service, alongside other appointment types and presentations. This meant that PrEP patients could face long waits, which may be unnecessary for a straightforward reissue of medication. You must be already registered as a patient at Axess to use this service.

The creation of the PrEP Express also frees up appointment space and creates more capacity for other sexual health matters in generic clinics.

Chris Higgins, Senior Sexual Health Outreach Practitioner at Axess said: “The PrEP Express clinic has been created as a fast-track service for those patients already established as PrEP users in the Axess service.

“We want to make the issuing of PrEP as straightforward as possible, in order to increase patient access to this life-changing, sex-positive medication.

“PrEP is an invaluable tool in our commitment to reducing the number of HIV transmissions to zero by 2030.”

The PrEP Express is open now for appointments. The clinic runs 9.15am – 12pm on Fridays at The Beat, Hanover Street, Liverpool City Centre.
