An exciting opportunity has arisen to become a patient Lay Reader to support Mersey West Lancashire Hospital Trust.

This will allow you to make a difference, use your voice and help improve healthcare.

Are you a patient or service user with experience of our Trust?

We are looking for Lay Readers to support and strengthen the quality of our patient communications.

Why get involved?

Help improve communication for all patients.

Make sure patient voices are heard.

Contribute to safer, clearer healthcare information.

Gain valuable experience and confidence.

What’s involved?

Flexible, voluntary role.

Review documents at your convenience.

No formal experience needed — just your perspective.

 What is a Lay Reader?

A Lay Reader is someone who:

Reviews patient letters, leaflets, and information.

Ensures language is clear, accessible, and patient-friendly.

Provides feedback from a patient perspective about anything that is unclear or you don’t understand.

Who can apply?

We welcome applications from anyone that has time free to review new /updated leaflets, returning comments to the team in approximately 10 days:

Patients, carers, and service users.

People from all backgrounds and communities.

Anyone passionate about improving healthcare communication.

    • Thanks for your question. There is a link to a leaflet with more information about the lay reader role within the article. The leaflet states that applications are welcome from people from the following areas; St Helens, Knowsley, Halton, South Liverpool, Southport, Ormskirk.
